Meryl Kastin: has been working & playing among some of her best teachers -
the healing plants- for over 17years. She has lots of hands-on experience
with propogation, growing organically, harvesting sustainably, and making
products consciously. Meryl's formal studies include graduating from
Michael Moore's Southwest School of Botanical Medicine. She ran her own
business, Alive & Wild Herbals, for 7 years while residing in the Southwest.
Currently, she is co-owner of Two Ravens Herbals with Jim Floccini in
North-central Idaho. (They offer a full line of medicines created from herbs
almost exclusively wildcrafted or grown themselves.)
Michael Pilarski is Friends of the Trees Society's
director since 1978. He has 25 years of hands-on
experience with organic farming, plant propagation,
horticulture, and native plant seed collecting. He
currently commercially grows and/or wildcrafts over
100 species of medicinal plants. His publications
include "Restoration Forestry: an International
Resource Guide to Sustainable Forestry Practices" and
"Ethnobotany and Ethnoecology Resource Guide".
Robyn Klein has taught herb classes for 20 years. She has served as a
faculty member of the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine (Bisbee, AZ);
the Dominion Herbal College (Burnaby, British Columbia); the National
School of Phytotherapy (Albuqueque, NM); the Yellowstone Institute
(Yellowstone Park, WY), the Natural Products Institute (Canyon Ferry, MT);
and three community colleges in the Seattle area. She is presently
teaching a course on Herbal Medicine at Montana State University. A
professional member of the American Herbalists Guild and a clinical
herbalist, Robyn has been published in the Australian Journal of Medical
Herbalism as well as dozens of other lay publications, and has authored a
chapter in a book on conservation of medicinal plants. She is currently
the chair of the Governor's Task Force on Wild Medicinal Plants.
Elaine Sheff is a Clinical Herbalist, having graduated from both the Rocky
Mountain Center for Botanical Studies and the Southwest School of Botanical
Medicine. She is a certified instructor of Fertility Awareness and Natural
Family Planning, a safe, effective birth control method used to avoid or
achieve pregnancy. Elaine has a clinical practice providing herbal
consultations for individuals with health concerns. In the past, she has
been one of the main organizers for the Montana Herb Gathering. Elaine
teaches herb classes throughout the western United States and is the founder
and co-owner of Meadowsweet Herbs in Missoula, Montana.
Gregory L. Tilford is well known for his wrok in fields of veterinary
herbalism and earth-conscious herbal studies. He is author of four
books, including "From Earth to Herbalist" and "All you ever wanted to
know about Herbs for Pets."
Mary Wulff-Tilford is internationally known as a leading expert in field
of holistic pet care. She is founder and president of Animals'
Apawthecary, Inc., a company that produces low-alcohol herb formulas for
companion animals. Mary is co-author of "All you ever wanted to know
about Herbs for Pets." (Bowtie, 1999)
Rebecca Wittenberg is an herbalist who has lived in Montana since May of
1994. She has been involved in herbal businesses since 1991, has formally
studied ethnobotany in college,, and has formal training including the
Southwest School of Botanical Studies with Michael Moore and an
apprenticeship with Tiaraona Low-Dog. In 1996, she started Root Laughter
Herbals, an herbal manufacturing company dedicated to bringing traditional
medicinal herbs into food forms. Since selling it she has been devoted to
teaching and clinical work
Rebecca philosophically stands for local herbalism, people using mainly
what they can grow or collect without damage to our planet, and each
person's involvement in their own health, whether that be studying herbs,
growing herbs, or reading articles about the pharmaceutical drugs they have
decided to take. She believes in herbalism working with, not against,
standard allopathic medicine.
Alma Snell
Was taught about wild foods and medicinal herbs by her grandmother, Pretty
Shield. She is full- blood Crow and lives on the Crow Reservation in
Montana with her husband. Alma teaches people the importance of eating
wild plants and other things that make one healthy. Her new book,
"Grandmother's Grandchild; My Crow Indian Life," was published in 2000 by
University of Nebraska press. She will bring copies to sell.
Roger Wicke, Ph.D.
Is the founder and current director of the Rocky Mountain herbal Institute.
He studied Traditional Chinese medicine herbology under C.S. Cheung, M.D.,
and Yat Ki Lai at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine,
graduating in 1985. He received the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980; M.S. and B.S. in
Bioelectrical Engineering also from MIT. He has conducted and published
research in neurophysiology, perception, pharmacology, and
electroacupunture at MIT, Boston University Medical School, and Stanford
University . Roger teaches the first-year classes in Traditional Chinese
Herbal Sciences.
Rustem S Medora
Has taught Pharmacognosy (the study of drugs from natural sources) for over
40 years. His undergraduate and masters degrees are from the University of
Gujerat (India) and his doctorate is from the University of Rhode Island.
His interests include production and distribution of crude plant drugs
across the world. He is an honorary member of the Academy of Ayurveda
Development and Research and has been appointed by the governor to serve on
the Wild Medicinal Plants Task Force for the state of Montana.
Sunny Mavor is a practicing herbalist from Bozeman, Montana. She is the
founder of Herbs for Kids and co-author of Kids, Herbs and Health. Her
teaching combines herbal wisdom, passion for the environment and
inquisitiveness in current herbal research to create a spirited combination
of past and future in every class. She is in private practice in Bozeman.
